I’ve been thinking about in-between seasons, and I wanted to share it with you.
**********************************
There is a space most people do not really talk about. And this is because it is uncomfortable.
It is the space between who you were and who you are becoming; often called the wilderness season.
It feels like delay, where life slows down in ways you do not understand. Where what once felt certain begins to feel unfamiliar. It often feels like God is silent.
I’m reminded of Elijah’s experience in the Bible. Elijah also found himself in a “wilderness season”. Shortly after experiencing victory, he was faced with fierce opposition and death threats. In frustration and despair, he fled into the wilderness, sat under a tree, and asked for death. God did not answer him at first, but nourished him back to strength.
I imagine that he must have felt alone, like God was silent. Even when the angel fed and nourished him, he may have wondered what God was doing, because God was not speaking to his situation. He spent forty days in the wilderness until he got to Mount Horeb. It was not until he got there that he heard God speak in a still small voice. But Elijah stayed attentive. He stayed close.
While Elijah did not get a response, God did not abandon him. God nourished him. Even when we do not understand our seasons, it is important to know nourishment is constantly available (in the Word).
Sometimes, the wilderness is where God strengthens you before He speaks clearly. It is where your trust in God is deepened, where yourdependence grows, and where the things that cannot survive the next season are gently stripped away. The silence does not always mean God is absent. Sometimes, it means He is preparing you.
There are times in life when you are still showing up, still praying, still doing what you know to do, yet something inside feels quiet. I have learned in those moments to stay close to God even when it does not make sense immediately.
Personally, I began to journal through those spaces, paying attention to what is quietly forming while nothing obvious seemed to be happening.
I noticed a pattern. Direction comes through simple obedience. A step I could take without full understanding. A prayer I returned to even when it felt unanswered. A quiet decision to remain faithful in worship and service.
Those little obediences became steady markers. Not showing the entire path, but giving enough light for the next step.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105
And there were also moments when the instruction was simply to be still.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
Stillness carried weight. It carried awareness that God was present even when nothing around me was happening the way I expected.
If you find yourself in a season that feels unclear, there is no need to rush it into meaning. There is something being shaped that time will eventually reveal.
Sometimes the wilderness is not about where you are. It is about what is being formed in you while you are there. And when the season has done its work, clarity will come.
Reflection prompt:
What is one peaceful practice you can hold onto in this in-between season, something simple enough to return to even when everything feels uncertain?
Maybe sit with it for a while.
What is forming will become clearer with time.
Love,
Nkiruka.
